Description
Burg Pottenstein in the franconian area of Bavaria was built in the 11th century and today is privately owned.
Saint Elisabeth, a Hungarian princess and window of Ludwig IV, Landgrave of Thuringia was held hostage here between 1228 and 1229. After her husbands death, she vowed never to marry again. Her family wanted her to remarry to further their political ambitions. In an effort to force her to remarry they held her hostage at Burg Pottenstein. Elizabeth, however, held fast to her vow. Elisabeth is noted for her charity in caring for the sick and poor. She died in 1231 at the age of 24. She was canonized in 1235.
